Did you know 70% of 4th graders in Georgia are not proficient in reading? Seventy percent. That number just shouldn't be right for our state's children. It’s hard to imagine, but it means most of our kids are already falling behind before they even get to middle school. That statistic really grabbed my heart.

As a homeschool mom and a substitute teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how every child learns differently. My husband, Donnie, and I have been married 25 years, and we have three children, one of whom we adopted. I’ve lived through the challenges and triumphs of helping children find their footing, whether they are reading their first words or grappling with advanced math. I believe every single child deserves the chance to truly thrive, not just barely get by.

That's why I'm running for State Superintendent. I’ve spent over 20 years in education and healthcare, and I believe we need to tackle this reading crisis head-on. My promise is simple: to make literacy a top priority so that every single child in Georgia has the foundational reading skills they need to succeed in school and in life. We can do better than ranking 38th in education nationwide.

Thousands of Georgia families are already standing with us because they know we can turn this around.

Thank you for considering what I’ve shared.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nelva Lee
